Thunder Snow Ho

There are words one likes to hear at Christmas-time.

I love you. I'm proud of you. Happy Holidays. Here, I have bought you a present.

Among the list of phrases that bring warmth and joy on the solstice, the following does not rank:

WARNING: THUNDER SNOW POSSIBLE.

What. the. fuck. Thunder snow? That's not weather. That's like...a 3rd level spell in some video game, or a boss's final attack.

Gaia has attacked you with Thunder Snow! Take critical damage, and admit you are a small and measly bug in her sight.

The motto of Maine should be: "If you like lake-effect snow, get a load of me!"

At least we are home and bundled up and I have mocha-pistachio cookies in the oven. We bought our first artificial tree this year since we're leaving--supposedly, if the blizzard doesn't block our way--for Cleveland the day after Christmas and can't leave a needle-dropping tree while we're gone. It was surprisingly hard to decide to buy a fake tree. Christmas trees have all this resonance for me, beyond smell and decorating. Getting my own tree has always felt so grown-up and competent to me--possibly because I remember the tree falling off the car onto the highway when I very small and my utter panic that it would get hurt, and thus getting it home always seems like a huge victory.

My mom says that when I was something like four, I "helped" her bring in the tree in the snow and when we had set it up in the living room and brushed off the snow, I put my hands on my little hips and said:

"See, Mom? We don't need men!"

Small Cat is essentially the same as Big Cat, obviously. I don't even really look much different.

Anyway, we'll be decorating our small plastic tree tonight. In a blizzard. With Thunder Snow. I love my life, and am a little afraid of it sometimes.

If you miss the smell, Bath and Body Works has a seasonal scent right now called "Evergreen" that is almost exactly like the real thing (there's also another one they have called "Tree" that is pretty good too; in fact, I might be mixing them up as to which smells better). It comes in room spray, essential oil, candles, plug-in diffusers, and reed diffusers.

Aaaand I'm done selling for the company that I stopped working for last week. :P

Thunder Snow is just about the best thing ever. We had some last year. It was not to be missed. :)

Boy, you're not exactly lucking out on your Maine weather experience. Honestly, so far this has been the worst winter we've had in years. Don't worry; it's supposed to rain on Christmas Eve day and then be sunny and brisk on Christmas.

What? You came to Virginia for Xmas?

Heh.
Yeah, that's our forecast.}:/

Yes, Santa Claus, there is a Virginia.

No, Virginia, you can't have snow for Christmas.}:P

If you've never heard thunder during a snowstorm, it can be quite disconcerting.}:P

We had thunder snow a few mornings ago in Seattle, as part of the city's December snowpocalypse. It was pretty fabulous -- hope you enjoy it! ^_^

snowpocalypse

Being in Seattle, this is amusing.

Journal-Person, I came from Metaquotes and wanted to share how much I adored your post. Your childhood story was love.

I always miss the thundersnow, but I hear it's awesome. But yeah, welcome to New England, we have Weather.

Also, I am assuming that tiny-Cat did not have a rack. So there's at least one difference.

Tiny Cat did not, admittedly.

Thundersnow????
I'm guessing there's no saving throw for that. O.O

I am seriously looking forward to the thunder snow. :)

Also, I love you and am proud of you.

Had the Thundersnow discussion with a friend at work, and I'm afraid I used the exact same description: "That's not a weather condition, it's a fifth-level spell!"

Geek minds think alike, I guess.

Happy Solstice!

Thunder snow is rare and cool! I got to see a lightning/snow storm once and it took my breath away. Just stay bundled up and enjoy the weather combo you are getting.

Dude! I've never even heard of thundersnow but it sounds SO COOL. Also, great name for a metal band.

Thunder snow? That's not weather.

Are you kidding? Thunder snow is some of the best weather ever! I do a little dance when I see those words in the weather report.

I can't even fathom what "thundersnow" might be. I feel the need to live in Maine for one winter now, just so I might experience it. XD Not this winter, obviously, but sometime in the future!

Gaia has attacked you with Thunder Snow! Take critical damage, and admit you are a small and measly bug in her sight.

LOL! This made my day (and helped me get my ass out the door to shovel the cars out!) I've experienced thunder snow a few times, it's pretty wild. Probably more common on the sea, where you are. Don't worry, if you don't like this weather, just keep waiting, it will change. And Spring on a northeast coastal island is going to be something special.

Now I miss "Thundercats." Oh, wait! I have the movie.

wtf? i have to post a damn hot photo of [info]trillian_stars in her undies to get 21 comments, and you get it for "thunder snow"?!

Um...is a fairly high comment journal, but not as high as some. *shuffles feet awkwardly*

People have always been talky in here.

I don't usually give bloggerly advice, but. The best way, I've found, to get a lot of comments is to make people feel like this space is in some sense also their space. To post about personal stuff, in a casual tone, interspersed with ranty sorts of things (which always get more comments than thoughtful stuff or photographs--I get a lot of comments on photos I post, I think, because I almost never post them, so it's rare to get a peek at what my life looks like.)

I've been blogging for a long time, seven years, and my readers comment more than usual, but not as much as some--a 100+ comment post is rare for me, but common for others. But there's no way to predict, really. I think any blog-space eventually has its own psychic feel, its own vibe, atmosphere, and depending on what that is, people behave accordingly.

I will try to comment more on your journal though--I'm generally a low commenter myself.

Where the frig are you getting Thunder SNow from? I don't see it on NOAA nor on WGME's site. It sounds cool. BRING IT!

Oh, god. My meteorologist friend says it's very real. God help us.

Yahoo news severe weather alert? Maybe it's just for the island.

Isn' that an AC/DC song?

Could be a Dethklok Christmas charol too. :)

CURSE YOU GAIAAAAAAA!!!!! **shakes clenched fists at the sky**

Goddamn your journals are entertaining. :)

I have experienced thunder snow...once. It was freaky because there was no prior warning via The Weather Channel. All I knew was that it was snowing and I heard an ominous rumble and thought, "wait..that can't be..thunder can it?"

I'm nearer to Chicago and my compatriots just shrugged at my excitement and trepidation as if..old hat.

We missed the thunder snow where I live..but we're still living with at least an inch of ice on everything from the snowcastrophe.

I saw the lightning last night! Just once, though.

Here from MQ to say welcome to Maine! I was weirded out by last night's thunder snow as well. :D

Thunder snow is spiffy. I've been in it. But nothing beats Thunder Fog!
I was crawling over Monteagle Mountain on I-24, the fog was so thick I could barely see the end of my hood a a little gleam from the reflectors on the road, when suddenly the world became bright white. It was like being inside a giant flourescent light bulb. then the crashing rumble of thunder. It happened five or six times before I got down the other side of the mountain and clear of the fog.

Maine- home of mix and match weather.
It can also snow while foggy (and fog while being snowy) and engage in other exciting and perplexing combinations.

On a good note- you have just seen one of the most exciting combinations.

Hey there, just popping in from Metaquotes.^^

See to see a fellow new Mainer! (I just moved to this state myself.) I have to say, Maine winter is a lot more...erm, impressive than the stuff I saw back in the South.

(And I see you're from Portland, I'm from Biddeford!)
