A Guide to Folktales in Fragile Dialects

I can safely announce this now:

My *counts on fingers* fifth book of poetry and second full-length collection, A Guide to Folktales in Fragile Dialects, will be published by Norilana Books around Christmas this year. All my poetry involving folkloric themes will be included, plus a series of false Tale Types modeled on the Aarne-Thompson system that will link the poems together.  I will also make available an ebook version and audiobook version on my website after the new year. It's going to be a hell of a book.

And it needs a hell of a cover. And I know too many good artists to just pull a public domain image from the archives. My last poetry collection had a stunning cover by A.R. Menne, and I couldn't settle for less now. One of the best things about the writer gig is being able to help your friends get a leg up. So, with the publisher's permission, this is what I've decided to do: a contest!

Your work can appear on the cover of my newest collection, shown at my readings and featured on all my promotional materials. It will be great exposure and there will be other payment as well, to be determined. Submit your piece to me at catherynne@gmail.com by September 30th or earlier, and Vera Nazarian and I will choose the winning piece.

Obviously this favors more traditional visual artists (though check out the Interfictions cover), but I'm hoping for something really unique, be it painting, digital art, or entirely otherwise. Ultimately the only requirement is that it has to be renderable in image-form, (again, Interfictions is a great example of installation art used as a cover.) You must be able to provide high-resolution images and some sort of written piece on how you created the cover for promotion--I will likely interview you on my website close to the release date. You may design either a simple cover piece or a wraparound image that encompasses both front and back covers--it is not necessary for you to design the cover itself, i.e. include the title or author name within the image, but if you feel moved, you may. It's really all up to you.

Folktales are the center of this collection, and the cover should reflect that. I will send out the manuscript (85% complete) to artists by request, but many of the included poems are readable through the poetry section of catherynnemvalente.com.

If you have any questions as to Vera or my taste, what we're looking for, or other requirements, leave them in the comments. If you have friends you think might me interested, point them this way!

I can't help with the cover, but we could have celebratory release party buttsecks.

I'm wondering if a tea painting would be appropriate. The one nice thing is that they're versatile in terms of wraparound or front cover only; if the resolution is high enough, the painting could do whatever you need. This does look fascinating and I would love to be a part of this.

I'd love to see whatever you came up with!

I know I'm still sick when . . .

Instead of reading, A Guide to Folktales in Fragile Dialects, I read A Guide to Folktales in Fraggle Dialects.

I can't wait for this flu to stop eating my brain.

I bet that Fraggles have really interesting folklore.

Hey! Super congrats!

And I may just have to see if I could come up with something that might interest you visually . . .

Love your work and would love to see something!

Very excited about this project, and looking forward to seeing what gorgeous goodies come out of the cover contest! :-)

I'm assuming color images are preferable? This would be a good assignment to give myself over the summer.

No color requirements. If b/w or sepia suits you better, that's fine.

A majority of my illustration work is in black and white, but I have been trying to expand into doing more color work, watercolor washes over ink. So I suppose it just depends on what I can come up with.

Awesome! Congrats.

... interstitial bead cover? As in, bead work to represent the collection as a whole (photos of it, anyway)? I have no illusions about winning, but I may just try something weird and off-the-wall like this. :3

would it be worthwhile to point my husband at this? digital photography, you know.

Congrats on finding your poetry a home! I'm no artist, so I'll just settle for enjoying the poetry when it's released.

I feel a bit embarrassed to ask you, as we only know each other a wee little bit, but... could you vouch me back into the lovely doctorwho_eps community? I miss it like a limb.

I'd buy all of your books! (Not that I didn't plan to eventually, but you know...)

Ya know, if you really like the "Interfictions" cover, the "Interfictions" cover artist is always looking for more work! :)

I would LOVE to see something from you, obviously! I particularly adore the Woman with Two Skins piece...I wonder how a digital version of that would look?

Looking at your site I see a bunch of stuff that would fit--please do submit whatever you think is best!

I'm no longer in possession of the original "Woman with Two Skins". (A woman in Maryland now owns it.) But I do have some of the materials I used to make it. The animal skin is part of a slightly creepy fur wrap that belonged to my grandmother. The miniature dress in the box I made myself. Just by chance, this weekend I'm being given and bunch of very old fabrics and lace and stitching that I might be able to use to make a "new" dress. If you like that motif I should be able to come up with something along those lines and take some photos.
I'm going to go read some of your poetry first though.

I've decided to see what I can come up with. Are there any major themes in the collection? How would I go about getting an idea of what the collection contains?

The poetry section on my website (catherynnemvalente.com) has a great deal of the poems linked, you can get a solid idea from that. The themes are folkloric--retellings of fairy tales and folklore, usually with a strong element of violence or sexuality and almost always from a female perspective. The site will give you a solid idea, I think.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!
